Semester Photography Project / Self Directed Theme:
Choose a project theme that allows you to explore and investigate a personal, political, or social concept. Work toward communicating your ideas through creative visual imagery. Prepare 3 new prints minimum per project critique. Discard, re-invent, extend, and push your limits and the realm of your thoughts throughout the semester. Final Project Portfolio will consist of 15 prints minimum, the final realization of your project’s concept.
Semester Assignment: Local Exhibition Review ( 6 exhibitions total )
South Florida has an active fine arts scene. In order to use the museums and galleries as an extended classroom, I would like each of you to attend, discuss, and share 6 exhibitions throughout the semester. Plan on attending and presenting 2 exhibitions per month, space them out so you are visiting the art scene once every two weeks.
WHAT TO BRING?
Collect items about the exhibition to present in class, such as art critic reviews from local press (miami herald, miami new times, etc), or local online art blogs, bring flyers, catalogs, and printed materials from the exhibitions, take your own photographs if allowed, and bring additional color images of the artists work upon further research.
TAKE NOTES during your art visit, and take photos if allowed, ask first!
Be specific on show information, artists featured, and gallery information, collect postcard, program, read as much information and gain as much knowledge as possible at the show, if the artist is present, feel free to ask questions. Do further research on artist / artists as necessary to strengthen your discussion.
WHERE TO GO?
On this website, please visit the Local Exhibitions Tab, and choose from the recommended current shows, which I will update often.
Please choose an art gallery from the Wynwood Arts District, OR choose a major museum or collection, because some galleries are commercial, and offer more “decorative” art, which I want you to avoid. Try to pick art shows that reflect the current contemporary art scene and engage you in a level of critical thinking.
Also, for Wynwood Galleries you can check out www.artcircuits.com for information on local art scene. Choose a show you are excited about.

Preliminary Guidelines for Discussion
- First, a review gives the reader a concise summary of the content. This includes a relevant description of the art show, as well as its overall perspective, argument, or purpose.
- Second, and more importantly, a review offers a critical assessment of the content. This involves your reactions to the work under review: what strikes you as noteworthy, whether or not it was effective or persuasive, and how it enhanced your understanding of the issues at hand.
- Finally, in addition to analyzing the work, a review often suggests whether or not the audience would appreciate it.
